2011-Dec-04 : Afternoon Flight (Bay Tour)

One of the benefits of flying around the SF Bay Area is its picturesque beauty and many photo opportunities. Last Sunday, a day after the statewide high winds diminished, a couple of VAA Chapter 29 pilots took off for a sightseeing trip over the Golden Gate Bridge.

John Buckham and Michael Mainiero were accompanied by me for a late afternoon flight. The Citabrias took off from HWD as a flight of two through clear skies and calm conditions. The formation crossed over the bay at 2500 ft, checking out the Bay Bridge construction progress, the San Francisco skyline, Alcatraz, and over the centerline of the Golden Gate Bridge. A short discussion between pilots about the possibility of performing a formation loop under and over the bridge was resolved as neither wanted to be a bad influence on our companion's flight ambitions.

The flight then went north towards Mount Tamalpais where we waved to the people at the look-out station, and then John took the lead position to take us back to HWD.
